Why Should You Wear A Cap When Running?

If you're a big fan of exercise and physical exertion, you probably have a soft spot in your heart for running. Actually, running is fantastic! You can get your cardio workout in, work on endurance, feel those endorphins rushing through your body. It's a sport that doesn't require a lot of fancy equipment (unless you really want to invest in it).

Things you probably need for running:

  • A good pair of shoes ("Good" being the operative word here. You don't need to spend a ton of money on shoes unless you really want to.)
  • Running belt (it wraps around your waist to hold your belongings)
  • Running hat or cap

Wait… What's that? A running cap? Yes. In fact, there are a number of good reasons to wear a cap when running. Let's check them out.

Protection

Unless you run indoors, you may want to wear a hat to protect yourself against some of Mother Nature's fiercer elements. Keeping the sun out of your eyes and off your face is a good start. Don't forget your sunscreen.

Aerodynamic

This depends on whom you talk to. There are runners who absolutely swear by the "fact" that your aerodynamic qualities are kicked up a notch when wearing the right kind of cap. Obviously, we’re not talking about something big and floppy, but sleek and closer fitting to your head.

Keeps You Cool

Wait a minute… Putting something on your head can help keep you cool? It's true. That said, you have to wear the right kind of hat for this to happen. It needs to be completely breathable (to allow for the evaporation of sweat) and lightweight. Many hats have venting for this express purpose.

Hair Restraint And Sweatband

While this isn't a problem for everyone, if you have bangs or longish hair, you may want to keep it out of your eyes while you're running. A hat works perfectly. If you wear a ponytail, you may choose to put it through the hole in the back of a snapback.

What's more, the band across the front of your hat can help keep sweat out of your eyes. Your running will be highly improved without that sweat and hair stinging and irritating your face and eyes.

Types of Hats

If you’re an avid runner who doesn't let winter stop you, and you insist on running out of doors, you may opt for a heavier, non-breathing hat to keep your body heat in where it belongs. Remember, however, that you're still going to sweat – profusely. Nonetheless, you may opt for a knit cap or a solid cotton or wool baseball cap style.

In summer, however, you're going to want to go with mesh so trucker caps, certain snapbacks, and the like are a good fit for runners. Turn the bill around to the back for better aerodynamics if you feel so compelled.

Additional Equipment for Those Who Want Them

For the record, the other pieces of equipment that some people include in their running gear are as follows:

  • Good sports bra (if applicable)
  • Running jacket
  • Running gloves
  • Running top
  • Running tights
  • Running shorts
  • Good running socks
  • Brightly colored, reflective vest if you're going to be running in or near traffic

Whether you run, cycle, attend sports games regularly, or just feel like hanging out with friends, it's almost always a good time to wear a baseball cap.
