Why Do Some People Run With Hats On?

For many runners, it's a personal preference, whether or not they wear a hat while running. For some people, going running without a hat on their head makes them feel exposed and somewhat "naked". Others feel like running with hats on simply makes them feel weighed down.

Why-Do-Some-People-Run-With-Hats-On

Those that do prefer running with a baseball cap or some kind of hat on their head have various reasons, aside from the fact that they feel lacking without it. Here are some of those reasons:

Runner’s Hair

If your hair is at a difficult length, not long enough to tie back but long enough to fly in your face, you may choose to wear a hat for hair control. You won’t be able to see clearly if your hair is in your eyes. Aside from that, it can be highly annoying to have hair in your face the entire time. When you're sweaty, it's going to stick to your face and neck, and nobody needs that.

Aerodynamics

To reduce drag during races, some sports enthusiasts wear swim caps, cycling helmets, etc. The same thing can be accomplished with the right hat for runners. You never know, when you're going for your personal best, you might shave off a couple of seconds with a hat.

Don't Overheat

Believe it or not, covering your head with a hat can actually help keep you cool. It's not as counterproductive as it may sound. Sweat is more readily evaporated with a good running hat. Generally, breathable, lightweight material is used to construct running hats to allow air in and under the hat. So the runner doesn't get too hot, this air flow helps cool them down.

It will also help keep the hot sun off the top of your head. That brings us to another benefit of wearing a hat when you run.

Protection Against the Weather

No matter what the weather is, you may decide to hit the trail or road anyway, if you're one of those truly dedicated runners. It is easy to sunburn your scalp, even with a good head of hair, unless you shield your head from the sun. With a hat, your eyes will be shaded by the brim, as well.

Wearing a hat while you run helps keep your eyes clear of dust, wind, and rain, as well as the sun. This can improve seeing ability, which a runner depends on for safety.
