Way back in the 1950s, as part of their uniform, the snapback was adopted by American baseball players. The rest, as they say, is history. Then, as part of popular fashion and pop culture, the snapback officially became the hat of the 90s. Across the nation, urban musicians adopted the style. Today, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Justin Bieber, and other artists can be seen in snapbacks more often than not.
Have you ever wondered, however, if there is something in particular you should wear with snapback caps? Is there something that shouldn't be worn with this type of hat? Let's look at some combinations.
Leather Jackets or Bomber Jackets with a Snapback
During colder months, grab your snapback and wear it with a good coat or jacket to keep you warm. Whether you choose a flight ready bomber, leather, or a heavier denim jacket, start off with a T-shirt underneath. For a smart but casual vibe, avoid heavy logos.
Footwear can consist of boots or sneakers. For pants, cuffed tailored trousers are a good choice, but ripped denim is a great choice, too. At your own risk, however, you can test out tracksuit pants.
A Shirt and a Snapback
Some people prefer to wear their snapback when they're going casual or to the gym. Don't stop there! Grab your favorite denim, button-down, or chambray shirt, a pair of chinos, and your favorite snapback and you're good to go to any number of occasions or locations. Rather than a snapback with branding or over-the-top slogan, you may choose something on the plain side. Rather than dress shoes, for this combo, pair your look with sneakers.
Sweats or Hoodies and a Snapback
If you're planning on going super casual, or you want to look like you just don't care, think hoodies and sweats coupled with a snapback. Rather than attending an event, you might also wear something like this just to run to the store. On the other hand, if you want to increase your street cred, go with a hoodie by Supreme or Gucci. Just don't overthink it.
In combination with the sweatshirt or hoodie, think joggers or jeans down below.
Activewear and a Snapback
Snapbacks and activewear go together like peanut butter and jelly. When you're training hard or working out at the gym, to keep your hair out of your eyes, you may choose to wear a snapback. In this case, it's entirely acceptable to wear it backwards. However, if you're going to be sweating, you may wear it forward simply to put the sweatband (included in some snapbacks) to good use.
So your hat doesn't get smelly or stained, make sure you brush up on proper cleaning/washing techniques for your activewear hat choices.
Formal or Smart Casual
Wearing a snapback when you're going formal is absolutely a no-go where many people are concerned. This is pretty much something you have to weigh out on your own. If you're looking to make a daring fashion statement, more power to you.
Most people would say you should avoid a snapback with a tuxedo. You can, however, possibly get away with a snapback if you’re going with a blazer or casual suit.
