Contrary to popular belief, flat-brimmed hats originated before the 1890s during early baseball games. The Brooklyn Excelsior first sported such caps which had a short, flat brim and a rounded crown. Then, it was known as the Brooklyn-style cap and thought to pioneer the future designs that we see today. Here are some key distinctive features of snapback caps.
Styles
Snapback caps are widely available in varying designs, colors, and patterns. Many snapbacks that are sold online or retail outlets have many specialized logos or graphics to attract more purchases. You can choose a more basic hat like an azure blue cap or could even have any other wilder designs like one with leopard prints. Essentially, snapback caps are not designed specifically only for men, but also for their women counterparts. The ladies' style hats would usually consist of a narrower and smaller cutting, which would generally provide a better fit for the female wearers.
Front Panels
In the past, the original New Era hats had an eight-panel design, but in our modern-day concept, snapbacks have adapted and switched to a six-panel design. The front panels on the snapback stiffen, which offers more structure and rigidity that is not present in other caps.
Adjustable Strap
The adjustable straps are one of the main deciding factors of whether a hat is a snapback hat or not. If it’s a snapback, it probably has a closure that is plastic in material and can easily adjust by snapping buttons at the back of it. It is this particular function that allows the snapback to have the one size fits all property. In comparison, dad hats usually consist of a Velcro or a metallic closure while fitted hats strictly do not have closure.
Fit
Though many snapback caps are deemed to fit any size, they are still generally designed to conform to an average-sized head of the wearer. You will want to prevent wearing a hat that is too tight, loose and covers your ears or eyes such that it will cause some significant discomfort when worn. Depending on the style that you aim to acquire, you can change the way you wear the snapback accordingly. There are several ways to wear snapback hats: forward, backward, and angled slightly on one side.
The Brim
Traditionally, snapback hats mainly only consist of a flat, wide brim. The dad hat style is pre-shaped and round-brimmed. Do not confuse between the two types of hats!
