What Are Actually Dad Hats?

Dad Hats are not just for dads anymore. These days they’ve become cool and can be worn by anyone, except dad, oh the irony. So, what exactly is a dad hat, and where did they come from? Well, they were originally designed in the early 20th century by Australian baseball players who wanted to keep the sun out of their eyes while playing the game. Today they're more popular than ever! Let's look at why it's time to add one to your wardrobe and give you some style tips on how to pull off the right look.

A Curved Brim

One of the common characteristics of dad hats is that they curve down in front. Unlike other hats, which sit flat on your head, dad hats are much more versatile because you can bend them to fit your head. When you purchase a dad hat, make sure it curves down towards your eyebrows. You can use them to shield your eyes from direct sunlight; when it's sunny out, you can dip one side of your hat to protect your face! Dad hats are great because they're an all-in-one shade solution that allows you to easily bend and shape them for multiple uses. Wear it backward if that's what looks best on you.

Relaxed Fit

Dad hats come in all shapes and sizes, but most are relaxed fit that fall right above your ears, making them a bit longer than a standard ball cap. They also generally have an extra-large bill that falls on one side of your head. The extra material provides protection from both the sun and rain if you're caught outside.

The Design

The design of a dad hat is wide-brimmed and can either have a flat or curved top. It usually has a full crown and deep sides, although some have an indented crown. The hat's style also changes depending on its material.: The design may be very structured in a straw version, while mesh makes it looser-fitting. Often seen in neutral colors such as black, brown, or khaki, dad hats are sometimes decorated with patterns. Typically worn off-center to one side of the head, dad hats come in rounded and flat varieties.

The Closure

The strap on most dad hats is adjustable, making it easier to get a snug fit. It'll stay on better regardless of what activity you’re engaged in. If there's no adjustability or elasticity in the strap, make sure to choose a hat with plenty of give.

The Brim

Many people don't realize that some hats have an arch in them while others are straight across. Straight-brimmed hats are more formal and work best with business suits, while arched-brimmed hats can be worn more casually with jeans or shorts.

The Colors

While dad hats can be found in many colors, most tend to be of neutral or warm colors, like beige or grey. The look is not meant to draw too much attention, which makes it a great choice for casual wear or even a as part of a uniform for some businesses.
