Washing A Hat In The Dishwasher? It's Possible!

Whoever heard of washing a hat in the dishwasher? Well, it can be done. Of course, as with so many things in life, it must be done right. We are referring to baseball caps here, not your dad's dress hat, by the way. There is an entirely different method when it comes to caring for dress hats like fedoras, pork pie hats, Panama hats, etc.

Washing A Hat In The Dishwasher? It's Possible!

Remember… The following information is strictly for baseball caps.

We Love Our Caps

Whether we have a favorite saying, want to advertise a local business, or show love for our team – or to provide welcome relief from wind, rain, glare, and heat – every day, we don our baseball caps. All across the country, worn by all ages, some of the most common accessories and/or headgear are baseball caps. Unfortunately, your hat will look dirty thanks to constant exposure to skin and hair oils and dirt, as well as the elements. When that happens, what can you do?

Baseball Caps and Dishwashers

You may have heard it referred to before, but it is possible to wash your baseball cap the dishwasher. Some people prefer a basin or a sink to this method. The washing machine, however, is not recommended – at least not by us. There is a lot of wear and friction associated with washing machines.

So, to keep your hat safe from damage and looking good as new, we're going to introduce you to dishwasher cleaning for baseball caps.

Dishwasher Washing For Baseball Caps

Here's what you're going to have on hand:

  • A frame/cage for baseball caps is optional (but recommended)
  • Also optional is stain remover or laundry additive
  • Non-lemon scented and non-bleach dishwasher detergent
  • A dishwasher, of course

First: If substances such as sweat have stained or heavily soiled your hat, to boost the effectiveness of the washing process, you may wish to pretreat problem areas. Allow that treatment to break down oils and dirt for about 30 minutes. Some people give the stain a light scrub with a soft toothbrush.

Next: If you have a frame for your baseball cap, insert the cap into it now. In an empty dishwasher, on the top shelf, set your framed hat. If, without a frame, you’re washing one or more hats, around the protruding pegs, place the adjustable strap. This secures it. Using binder clips or clothes pins, you can also clip the hat to the bottom or sides of the rack.

Next: In the usual quantity, add the appropriate dishwashing detergent. Again, no citric acid, no bleach. The fabric could be damaged if those are contained within. Using the warm water normal wash cycle (not hot water) set the appliance. Turn off the heat dry option. Press “start”.

Finally: Take the hat frame out of the dishwasher once the cycle is completed. Overnight, set it aside to dry. Make sure adequate air flows around the hat. While it's drying, it must be in a position that allows it to keep its shape.

Some people like to place their hat over a coffee can, overturned bowl, etc. to help it keep its shape.
