The New Era Hat Company

After borrowing $1000 from Rose, his sister, a man named Ehrnhardt Koch put together a little company in 1920, calling it the "E. Koch Cap Company. The building in which this tiny company began was in Buffalo, New York, where the company is still headquartered. Some 60,000 caps were produced by the company in 1920 alone.

Their first MLB contract (Major League Baseball) was with the Cleveland Indians in 1934. The Brooklyn style cap, the 59Fifty, was created through redesign and modernization of the old-style baseball cap in 1954. There were 20 teams in the MLB in 1965, and New Era was supplying caps for half of them. With 30 teams now in the MLB, New Era is licensed exclusively for MLB on-field baseball cap production.

When Chris Koch took over as CEO in 2001, changes were on the horizon. The company acquired rights for the NFL (National Football League) to produce caps with football logos. New Era even became the official cap provider of the Big Bash League – Australian cricket – in 2013. Having exclusive rights for the NBA, NFL, and MLB simultaneously, New Era became the first headwear company to do so.

Things have continued to improve through the years for New Era as more and more styles keep hitting the shelves.
