You may have one or a few favorite baseball caps that you wear on a daily basis, no matter if it’s for a ball game, shopping, going out for dinner, or even working on your lawn. You might even have some limited edition or vintage caps that you have painstakingly maintained in your possession for a long time. Your old caps will most likely have to undergo the process of preservation and restoration. The process of cleaning your time-worn caps may require greater care and delicacy, especially in preserving their color, design, and texture. Here are some tips for restoring old baseball caps.
Steps to Restoring Old Baseball Caps
The tools you need are a sink, water, detergent, and washcloth.
- Step 1
Pick a suitable detergent that is mild because if it’s too strong you may cause the color to fade in the fabric. You are advised not to use bleach or products that contain bleach since it will also strip the color from the fabric of your baseball cap.
- Step 2
Next, make sure your cap is turned over such that its inside is facing upwards. Using a small corner of your washcloth, dip it in detergent and rub on an area of your cap that’s not as visible. It is important to maintain your rubbing motion in small circles and rub very gently.
- Step 3
After rubbing sufficiently, wait and let the detergent settle into the fabric of your baseball cap. Then, using the other corner of your clean washcloth, dip it in water and rub the detergent away from the spot. Let the cap dry. Examine it very carefully to check for any signs of the fabric deteriorating or the color fading. If so, it means the detergent you used is too strong and you must reattempt with a milder one at a different spot of the cap.
- Step 4
If there is no fabric deterioration or color fade, you can rub your whole cap with the same detergent using the washcloth. Again, take note of your rubbing strength and the rubbing motion. Should there be any tough or obvious stains, cater more attention and time to rub those areas of your cap. Then, rinse your washcloth with water and wipe the detergent away entirely. Let the cap dry in an open indoor area to make sure it doesn’t shrink. Don’t put it in the dryer as it might damage the condition of your cap. Also, be sure to not place it under the sun as the colors on your cap might fade.
- Step 5
Add detergent to your water-filled sink, let your cap soak in it for a few minutes. Rub any obvious tough spots with your washcloth and let the cap dry completely indoors again.
