Quick Facts about Orlando Magic

The Orlando Magic is an Orlando, Florida based American professional basketball franchise in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Magic plays in the Eastern Conference of the NBA, having previously won the Eastern Conference titles back in 1995 and 1999.

Along with the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Magic was introduced into the league as an expansion team back during the 1989-90 season. In its first three years, results and play were poor, with the team posting losing records in each year. Their fortunes changed for the better, however, when they drafted rookie Shaquille O’Neal with the first pick in the 1992 NBA draft. O’Neal led the franchise to its first playoff series in 1993-94 and then the NBA finals in 1994-95 before losing out. The team’s only next NBA finals appearance would only come in the 2008-09 season after a sustained stretch of poor seasons.

Team Achievements

Since the Magic’s induction into the league, they have been involved in the NBA playoffs 16 times out of 32 seasons. The franchise has also gone to the NBA finals twice in 1995 and 2009. Overall, the team has won two conference titles (1995, 2009) and six division titles (1995, 1996, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2019)

Logo

The Orlando Magic has sought to maintain the main elements in their logo, that being the iconic “star ball” and the colors that show the heritage. Since 2011, their newly designed logo combines the team’s name “Magic” with a black and white border, the star ball brought from the previous logo. At the top of its new logo is the word “Orlando” in black.

Mascot

The official mascot of the Orlando Magic is Stuff the Magic Dragon. Its name is inspired by a song called “Puff the Magic Dragon” while “stuff” is slang for the meaning of a slam dunk. Ever since the franchise’s debut in 1989, Stuff has played a pivotal role in the organization and has entertained its fans in their home arena for over 20 years.
