New Yorkers love their teams. That is particularly true when it comes to the New York Mets. Sure, lots of cities/states support their sports teams, but New Yorkers are dedicated in a way that only New Yorkers can be!
The Major League baseball team known as the New York Mets replaced the departed New York teams - the New York Giants and the Brooklyn Dodgers - as an expansion team in 1962. Probably as a result, the Giants’ orange and the Dodgers’ blue were incorporated into the colors of the New York Mets.
At Manhattan's Polo Grounds, the Mets played home games from 1962 to 1963. They played at Shea Stadium from 1964 to 2008. At Citi Field, formerly Shea Stadium, the Mets have played since 2009.
Having purchased the team for $2.4 billion, the billionaire hedge fund manager, Steve Cohen, has owned the Mets since 2020. The Mets win-loss record, with a .480-win percentage, was 4,474 - 4,842 at the end of the 2020 season.
Mascots and Theme Songs
The official New York Mets mascot is Mr. Met. When the Mets still played at Polo Grounds, on a program cover in 1963, he was first introduced. A live costumed version was introduced to fans back in 1964 when the team moved to Shea Stadium. It is thought that, rather than being artistically rendered, Mr. Met is the first human mascot in the MLB (Major-League Baseball).
Did you know that every major league baseball team has its own theme song? It's true. Ruth Roberts and Bill Katz, back in 1961, wrote the signature song for the Mets one year before the first season. It is entitled "Meet the Mets". At Mets’ home games and during television broadcasts, it plays on the radio.
Team Logo
Designed by Ray Gotto (a sports cartoonist), the primary logo for the New York Mets looks as follows: Trimmed in white, and written in orange script, the name "Mets" appears across a New York City skyline representation in blue. In the foreground is a white suspension bridge. With baseball stitching across the image, all of this is surrounded by an orange circle.
There are different meanings for different parts of the skyline where the logo is concerned. Displayed in this skyline are the following:
- United Nations headquarters
- Empire State building
- Woolworth building
- Williamsburg savings bank building (at the time the team was founded, this was Brooklyn's tallest building)
A slight alteration was given to the logo in 1999. Originally placed to the left of the team script, the little "NY" was removed.
You may also see a logo that consists of an interlocking, orange NY. It is on a blue cap and is the same logo used during the final years of the New York Giants. The cap resembles the one the Brooklyn Dodgers formerly wore.
