Team Spotlight: Colorado Rockies

Playing a distinctive “mile-high style” of baseball, the Colorado Rockies have been lighting up scoreboards and pitchers for over two decades, where the franchise’s success was nothing short of impressive during the first few years of their debut.

Introducing Colorado Rockies

As one of Denver, Colorado’s beloved sports teams, the Colorado Rockies are an American professional baseball team and a member club of the National League (NL) West division that competes in Major League Baseball. Colorado Rockies plays their home games in the Lower Downtown area of Denver at Coors Field, which is reminiscent of a classic baseball park that is combined with state-of-the-art technology. The Colorado Rockies is also owned by the Monfort brothers and managed by Bud Black.

History of Colorado Rockies

Baseball has a long history in Denver, with individuals having attempted to attract a major league franchise to the state upon recognizing the city had a growing interest in Major League Baseball. Their vision became reality when Denver was awarded a franchise in 1991. Two years later, there was unparalleled excitement when the Colorado Rockies played their first game in Denver and were immediately notable for the high scores of their home games. They played their first game in front of more than 80,000 fans, the largest opening day crowd in baseball history. Decades of anticipation and dissatisfaction had finally been fulfilled with a major league team, and the Rockies were sold out for the first five years.

In their first two seasons at Mile High Stadium, the Rockies played to more than 7.7 million fans – they had 52 crowds exceeding 60,000 spectators, of which 21 of them exceeded 70,000. The park was originally designed to accommodate about 43,000 people but was quickly redesigned to accommodate more than 50,000 before its 1995 opening. The stadium's presence spurred massive development in the area; that growth continues today and has turned downtown Denver into one of the top places to eat, play and live year-round.

Colorado Rockies Logo

Since their establishment almost three decades ago, the Colorado Rockies logo has undergone a few redesigns – going from something that looked a little all over the place to settling on only having two letters. The state of Denver being within proximity to the Rocky Mountains played a big role in the creation of the team’s first logo, which comprised a black and white baseball going past the Rocky Mountains which were colored purple. The wordmark “COLORADO ROCKIES” was inserted onto the logo, but this whole design did not make the cut.

Their current logo only consists of two letters – “C” and “R” in silver with black trim and are linked, which represents “Colorado” and “Rockies” respectively. While multiple aspects of their logo design were changed, one thing is clear – the team liked using the colors purple, silver, black, and white.
