The Arizona Diamondbacks, also known as the D-backs, are a National League baseball team with their home stadium in Phoenix (NL). The Diamondbacks won the World Series in 2001, just their fourth season in Major League Baseball. If you are a fan of the Arizona Diamondbacks and want to learn more about them and their history, here is a team spotlight on the Arizona Diamondbacks!
How It Started
Together with the Tampa Bay Rays, formerly known as Tampa Bay Devil Rays, the Arizona Diamondbacks were established in 1998 as expansion teams. The Diamondbacks unexpectedly finished last in their division in their inaugural season. Before the 1999 campaign began, the team signed Randy Johnson, a free-agent pitcher. Along with Matt Williams, holdover third baseman, and another recent addition, Luis Gonzalez, they helped the Diamondbacks quickly improve as they won 100 games and qualified for the postseason before falling to the New York Mets in the opening round.
The Diamondbacks had what was probably the best pitcher duo in baseball when Curt Schilling joined the organization during the 2000 season and ended up joining Johnson in the starting rotation; the duo was at its best in 2001. While helping Arizona win its second division title that year, Johnson and Schilling came in first and second place in the voting for the Cy Young Award, which is given annually to the league's top pitcher.
The team then won its first World Series, defeating the New York Yankees in a thrilling seven-game series, with the two-star pitchers sharing the award for Most Valuable Player.
The Diamondbacks had an overall record of 1,914-2,034 from 1998 through 2022.
Arizona Diamondbacks Logos and Uniforms
Purple, black, teal, and copper were the Diamondbacks' initial colors. Their initial logo had an italicized block letter "A" with a diamond design and a snake's tongue for the crossbar. The "A" logo was added to the sleeved uniform before the 2001 campaign. Player names and numbers were teal with purple trim on all three sets of uniforms, respectively.
The Diamondbacks made some minor changes to their current clothes for the 2020 season. The teal-trimmed grey uniforms were decommissioned as the snakeskin motifs were taken off. The team also switched back to their usual grey jersey after previously donning a deeper shade.
The Arizona Diamondbacks were one of the seven clubs to wear Nike 'City Connect' uniforms in 2021. "Serpientes" is inscribed on the front of the design, which is mostly made of sand. The first "S" in "Serpientes" has a rattlesnake-like form. The Diamondbacks' current sand, red, and black color scheme is used for the Arizona flag patch on the right sleeve, and the black and sand are used for the 'A' logo on the left.
