Snapback caps – they are worn by men, women, grandpas, grandmas, athletes, rappers, teenagers – you name it. They are one of the most popular – if not THE most popular – piece of headwear ever invented. One of the reasons why so many people are able to wear these hats is that they are adjustable, courtesy of the namesake snapback closure at the rear of the hat. Made from plastic, these straps have holes and pegs with which to adjust the size of each hat. There are other adjustable hats as well, with straps at the rear made from cloth with Velcro or a buckle. (Some caps even have a stretchy elastic band at the back.)
The History of Snapback's
When the Brooklyn Excelsiors baseball team – as early as 1849 – donned their new specialized baseball caps, the snapback made its appearance. Why were they so special? The adjustable strap in the back of the hat made it fit practically any head. Who knew the cap madness that would ensue?
The snapback became very popular around the 1980s. In the 90s, it took off like a shot! This came mostly courtesy of rap and hip-hop artists adopting the hat as an identity maker. Names like Dr. Dre and Ice Cube aren't often seen out in public without their trustee caps. Other genres and music artists also love their baseball caps including Rihanna and Beyoncé.
Popularity
Strangely enough, snapbacks became a little less popular around the year 2000.
Back in style at that time were fitted caps. These types of baseball caps cannot be adjusted but come in individual sizes. If you have a hard-to-fit head, or are between sizes, you're probably very thankful that the popularity of snapbacks soared back to life.
Once again, the snapback was an icon in the fashion world around 2011. Tyga and Chris Brown helped resuscitate the hat and style. You may not believe it, but there is even a song (and viral video) about this turn of events entitled "Snapbacks Back". Thank you, Chris Brown. Not surprisingly, with the hat’s new reestablished popularity, it was eventually mentioned in any number of songs and videos.
Today, not only is the snapback considered an icon in the urban and street style, it can be – and is – worn to nearly any occasion by almost everyone!
