A necessary part of cycling, cycling caps also come in handy every day. For various reasons, people simply enjoy wearing them. Of course, people also enjoy wearing snapback baseball caps, fitted caps, dad hats, and more. It's a matter of taste and functionality. Naturally, the reasons to wear a cap when cycling are conducive to the sport itself. We'll talk about those in a moment. First, however, let's take a look at cycling caps and their history.
In 2003, the UCI made helmets compulsory. Before that, cycling caps were worn pretty regularly. Perched aboard the heads of pro cyclists in the 70s through the 80s, they've been heavily documented – particularly on those who enjoyed the quirky, cool racer vibe.
Don't confuse a baseball cap with a cycling cap, however. They are very different. The cycling cap is more flexible, made of thin material, has a peak, and to achieve the perfect fit is often elasticized at the back.
Your Cycling Cap– Why Wear It?
Wearing a bicycle cap can be done for practical reasons:
- In bright conditions, as a sun shield
- Keep the rain out of your eyes
- Stop sweat from dripping into your eyes
With or without a helmet, are you tired of your hair going crazy when you cycle? Your cycling cap can be of assistance here. In the city, you may decide to wear one under your helmet if your hair is still wet when you leave the house. It can help stop hair ridges.
Even when you're not on your bike, if you want to single yourself out as a cyclist, you can always wear your cycling cap. If, while commuting, you want to show your Rapha stripes – and you’re a weekend rider – this can work. On the other hand, if you want to adopt a particular hipster look, and you're a diehard fixie rider, your bicycle cap works well here, too.
Your Cycling Cap – How to Wear It
You can wear your cycling cap alone or under a helmet. It all depends on what makes you most comfortable.
These types of caps can be worn peak down or peak up. You look a little more stealth with the peak flipped up. So, without looking too obvious, you can have the benefits of a regular cap. They can be hard to flip up, though, under a helmet.
Note: For a while, it was considered uncool to wear a cycling cap when you weren't cycling. As is most often the case where fashion and style are concerned, however, this outlook has changed. What it actually all boils down to is what you like to wear, what you feel comfortable in, and what looks good on you. Some people think they look better in a baseball cap than in a cycling cap.
