Popular Baseball Cap Styles You Need To Know

You may have heard this from a fashion advisor, or you may have come up with on your own. Regardless: "You're either a hat guy or you're not." Though it's not as simple as all that, it is somewhat true. Choosing the right cap can go a long way, particularly if you’ve got a bit of fashion sense and care about the way you look. Surprisingly, not everyone does.

Popular baseball cap styles

Baseball cap styles, and there are many, all equate to a couple of things for some guys:

  • Weekend fixture
  • Personal signature

For other guys, it may take their put-together look and throw a casual finishing touch on it – depending on the style of baseball cap.

Yet another guy is the one who, while keeping the sunroof or windows open, simply wants to keep the hair out of his eyes. That's it – and that's okay! That's his style and his preference.

Why Guys Wear Baseball Caps

The reasons for wearing baseball caps are many, including the following:

  • Bald spots/bad hair day
  • Personality
  • Practicality
  • Cheering on your favorite team… and about a million other reasons!

Regardless, some guys love their caps. With confidence and panache, they rock baseball cap styles. One of the biggest reasons…. they want to wear the hat and they like it.

Just for fun, let's take a look at some of the different styles of baseball caps and how they should be worn.

5-Panel Hats

This hat has gone through several stages:

  • A skater thing back in the 80s
  • A hipster on a bicycle look (think Brooklyn)
  • Pretty much for anyone, a city dweller/hipsters/surfer/whatever look

How to style it: With a hoodie and joggers, keep things casual. With a coach’s jacket and worker pants, lean toward a skater look. With an overall pattern or print, this hat looks great. Don't be overly busy or fussy with your design.

Snapback Hats

Rather than being fitted, the snapback hat is adjustable for almost any head. With about any style you can imagine, this cap can be a relatively good fit – from California cool to hipster to preppy to athleisure and more.

How to style it: With almost anything, you can wear a dark color cap.

Dad Hats

With an adjustable closure, compared to fitted caps, these are less structured. They are purposely worn-looking.

How to style it: Remember, back in the late 80s and early 90s, the shirts with the little polo horse on them? You could go with that same style today because, as many guys already know, what's old is now new again. No Polo Ralph Lauren shirts? Consider something a bit offbeat.

Fitted Caps

What’s important here, since it's not adjustable, is that the hat fits well. It's a great way to show your love for a particular brand, a city, team, etc.

How to style it: Choose this hat for your allegiance, not for color. Wearing one for the color and having no clue as to what its embroidery means is just silly. Don't even think about getting one that's oversized. Additionally, take off that sticker!

Trucker Hats

This is, more or less, a personal preference. If there were any baseball cap styles that only some people can pull off, a trucker hat will be it.

But no matter what kind of hat you choose, there are a lot of guidelines that should be followed to really rock that baseball cap. Check these out:

  • Going on a first date? Leave the hat at home.
  • Whatever your choice, be proud of it! You're not hiding under the hat. Remember that. Wear it with confidence, embrace it, and let it show off your style.
  • No stickers!
  • No grungy hats – keep it clean.
  • When it comes to sports teams, find vintage name brands, long retired team colors – something obscure. That gets you extra points!
  • If you wouldn't wear a T-shirt to a particular occasion, you probably shouldn’t wear a baseball cap. Going to church? Maybe not. Meeting the parents of your girlfriend for the first time? Again, another good time to leave the hat at home.
