Major Differences Between Dad Hats And Fitted Caps

Dad hats and fitted caps are both popular with young and old, male or female, sports lovers and non-sport enthusiasts… any number of people, in fact. Some prefer the relaxed look of dad hats while others like their look a bit more refined and… well, fitted.

Here, we're going to take a look at the difference between dad hats and baseball caps. But not just any baseball cap… no, no. We're going to look specifically at fitted caps. First of all, let's check out what has come to be known as the "Dad Hat".

Major Differences Between Dad Hats And Fitted Caps

Dad Hats

Typically made of cotton or canvas material, the dad hat is a baseball cap, it's true. Compared to your traditional baseball cap, however, the brim is curved, but not quite as much. The curve is slight. For the wearer, dad hats are frequently a tad oversized.

A slightly more complex explanation for dad hats involves the fact that they usually contain simple logos, have unstructured front panels, and are basically a six-panel baseball cap of the snapback variety.

They are no-frills kinds of hats as opposed to fitted caps, trucker, and snapback caps. They may even look a tad worn or slightly tattered in spots (distressed).

Don't let the name of this hat fool you. Dads aren't the only ones who wear them. Moms, grandmas, aunts, sisters, and others of the female persuasion can wear these hats as well. They are popular among outdoor fanatics, teenagers, and many celebrities.

Dad Hat Wrap-Up

Dad hats have/are the following:

  • Comfortable and laid-back
  • One-size-fits-all
  • Possibly faded, simple design, unstructured body
  • Slightly curved brim
  • Relaxed fit
  • Distressed

Fitted Caps

Now we travel to the other end of the spectrum to check out fitted caps.

A fitted cap looks a lot like a basic baseball cap. You do not have the luxury of adjusting the size of a fitted cap, however, as you do with some baseball caps. Some fitted hats fall into a particular range where size is concerned. Think large/extra large or small/medium. A specific head size is assigned to other styles, types, or brands of fitted hats.

Typically, the brim of these hats is flat. Some of the most popular fitted hats today are "59FIFTY" and "New Era". Don't be surprised if you find a gold sticker on your fitted cap. Some people are convinced that by removing the sticker you devalue the hat. That's pretty much up to the individual and how much of a fanatic you are about collecting.

Compared to dad hats, the fitted types have a cleaner, round finish. If you're a fan of throwback styles, the fitted cap is probably for you.
