People wear different hats for various reasons. You might be wearing one to complement your outfit for the day, look good for a party, or to support your favorite sports team. But when you take your hat off, what then? It's crucial when it comes to storing hats, that you do it in the proper manner.
Some pretty harsh treatment can be dealt out to your shoes and clothes and they’ll still survive. On the other hand, a much higher level of care is necessary for most hats. We've got some expert advice for keeping your hats in good condition and the best way to store them.
Shape Must Be Protected
Why is it so important to store your hats correctly? Because you don't want to ruin the crown or the brim. They crush easily. Once you've bent your hat, though you may be able to reshape it, it could also be destroyed beyond hope. Why run that risk when storing hats is easy and can be done in many ways?
Nesting Saves Space
In one stack, you can nest several hats to support their crowns, as long as the hats will withstand the process. When packing them away, storing them on shelves, or placing them on foam heads, nest the smaller ones inside the larger hats.
Direct Sunlight Should Be Avoided
You may wear your hat out in the sunlight, but when storing it, direct sun should be avoided. Colors will fade in sunlight. Certain materials will dry out, become brittle, and/or crack if exposed to too much sunshine.
The Best Storage Is Boxes
Boxes in general are a good place to store things, but if you can find a few hat boxes, even better. This is particularly applicable if you have hats that are extremely delicate, sentimental, important, etc. If you do it right, you can even stack hats inside a hatbox, provided there is room and the hats are sturdy enough.
No hatboxes? Think about purchasing some inexpensive bins. Regardless, keep out unwanted moisture by adding a silica gel packet to any storage container.
Around the House Storage
Of all the categories here, this is the most extensive, but we'll try to make this quick and concise. For everyday wear, when it comes to storing hats, there are numerous solutions for saving space. For the hats you wear most, consider these storage and organizational suggestions:
- Shoeboxes
- DIY storage – Between two hooks along the wall, stretch a wire, a chain, or twine. With clothes pins, attach your hats to the line.
- A hat rack hung over the door
- Hat hangers
- Pegs or hooks
Long-Term Storage
If you have to store your hats long term, the best way to do so is in the hat boxes mentioned above. You can stack them in the closet, out of sight, and out of the way. Make sure, however, you don't place anything on top of them and risk crushing the boxes and the hats inside. If you put them in a true storage unit, make sure it is climate controlled.
