How Pop Culture Has Influenced Headwear And Fashion

Before we can determine what kind of an effect pop culture has had on headwear and fashion, we need at least a rough idea of what is referred to by the term "pop culture". It is a set of objects, beliefs, and/or principles that embody the broadest meanings a social system share. It can include things like linguistic conventions, fashions and trends, entertainment and leisure, media, music, objects, and more.

Pop culture examples cover a vast array of genres including the following:

  • Television
  • Advertising
  • Fads
  • Leisure
  • Entertainment
  • Sports
  • Cyber culture
  • Print
  • Popular music and more

The Olympics, the World Cup, and other such sporting events are consumed by a world community.

Three Pop Culture Themes

Some people believe that there are basically three themes where pop culture is concerned. They are as follows:

  • Celebrity status isn't confined to just those most beautiful, any longer.
  • Nothing is private.
  • There is validity to individual voices.

Influencing Headwear

To explain how headwear has been influenced by pop culture, nothing works as well as an example. Here are, in fact, a handful of examples of headwear that was pop culture influenced, or vice versa:

  • Not just a du-rag, but a baseball cap over the top, courtesy of Roc-a-Fella Records
  • The bucket hat worn in a video by rapper Big Bank Hank (Sugar Hill Gang)
  • New York Yankee caps were worn by any number of rappers and hip-hop celebrities in the early 2000s
  • The hat worn by drug lord Walter White from Breaking Bad
  • The Vivienne Westwood hat worn by Grammy winner Pharrell
  • The hat worn by Princess Beatrice when she attended the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton
  • The hat that incorporated big shapes and bold colors – Stacy Dash’s Dion – in "Clueless"
  • Mayim Bialik’s flower topped, floppy crusher hat worn on "Blossom"
  • The famous, iconic pillbox hat worn by Jackie Kennedy

Rap/Hip-Hop and Fashion

When it comes to the influences pop culture can have on fashion – or the other way around – rappers have played a huge part. Here are some examples:

  • Casual baseball gloves (2011, Drake)
  • Leather pants (2010, Kanye West)
  • Shutter shades (2006, Kanye West)
  • Print hoodies (mid-2000s, Pharrell)
  • Dental grills (2005, Paul Wall)
  • Fitted caps and button-down shirts (2003, Jay-Z)
  • Throwback jerseys (2001, Fabolous)
  • One pant leg rolled up (1995, LL Cool J)
  • Bandanna tied in front (1995, Tupac Shakur)
  • Both Snoop Dogg and Grand Cuba helped Tommy Hilfiger become a fashion legend
  • Laceless Adidas (1986, Run DMC)
  • And many, many more

Pop Culture Influences

How does pop culture influence fashion? Indirectly, cliques are created by fashion. These cliques are clung to by teenagers pertaining to taste. In turn, their fashion is influenced by the cliques. In regard to apparel and clothing, fashion is constantly changing. The rapid pace of change in popular culture, and the way teenagers are affected by it, is indirectly reflected by the ever-changing apparel.

When it comes to fashion trends, where does the most influence come from? Here's a surprise… the answer is NOT celebrities! Reportedly, fashion trends are influenced most by these three things:

  • What people you see every day are wearing.
  • Store displays.
  • Clothing already owned by the majority of consumers.
