Headwear Fashion In The 21st Century

There once was a time when protection from the elements – wind, rain, and sun – was the only reason to wear a hat. But as far back as ancient cultures, they became somewhat of a status symbol. Eventually, in order to make a fashion statement, hats became a type of accessory. Headwear fashions are a definite consideration for appearances on the red carpet, at the club, and more. Headwear is also a staple where fashion designers are concerned, in many cases.

If your wardrobe could use a bit of flair, covering your head with something stylish is a great way to go about it. Hats range from completely and totally affordable to ridiculously pricey – and everything in between. Just remember that you don't have to spend a lot of money to wear a great hat.

Without further ado, let's look at 21st-century headwear fashions.

Headwear Fashion In The 21st Century

Coming in at Number One – The Tried-and-True Baseball Cap!

This will probably come as a surprise to no one, but baseball caps are holding solid at number one where 21st century headwear fashion is concerned. It's doubtful they'll ever give up that spot. That's good news for many people because it’s simply their hat of choice. Whereas this used to be a baseball game necessity, there are now more fashionable choices with patches involving cartoon characters, catchy sayings, most any sports team imaginable, camouflage, wild colors, or no decorations at all.

Your choices are pretty much fitted or adjustable (snapbacks), but there are variations on even those.

The Beanie

What today is an ultra-hip outfit, started out as a necessity for winter climates. This cold-weather hat is something you'll see on the heads of newborns to keep them warm. To look cool, teens wear beanies any time, and to protect themselves from the elements, adults don this headwear, too. A classic is the knit hat style.

The Fedora

If you can rock this look, you absolutely should! Aside from picking one up at a garage sale or thrift store, however, unless your city has a hat store, you might find them hard to locate. A French character wore this hat style back in the 1800s in a play and, ever since then, it has been considered sexy and stylish. Guess what the name of the play was… "Fedora". It's true! By the way, women can wear these just as fashionably as men – maybe more so.

The Sun Hat

Do you have to live in a tropical climate to wear a sun hat? Not exactly. If you have skin cancer concerns – and pretty much everyone should these days – you will want to throw one of these on before you go in the sun, no matter where you live. On the beach, you can look very chic coordinating your swimwear with a beautiful sun hat. If the brim is wide enough, your shoulders will be protected from UV rays as well as your face.

The Cowboy Hat

What's that? You don't own a horse or ride bulls? That's okay. The cowboy hat filled a need for the settlers who moved west. Today, however, they’re seen off the ranch, as well. For both women and men, they've become a fashion statement.

Men can look a little on the macho side wearing a cowboy hat, while women can take this to a new level looking cute, sexy, stylish, and more.
