Four Reasons Golfers Should Wear Hats

Caps or hats go with numerous kinds of sports. If you play tennis or baseball, you may opt for wearing a baseball style cap. But what about other sports? Maybe… golf? There can be little doubt as to whether or not golfers should wear hats. You see them on so many of the pros that it's a pretty safe bet, hats are right at home on the heads of golfers. Why is this?

Professional golfers wear hats, amateur golfers wear hats, and golfers who haven't quite reached the level of expert wear them as well. When it comes to golfers, more than just one type of hat can be worn. It all depends on their functionality and taste (or style).

Hats are worn by golfers, particularly amateurs for the following reasons:

  • Reduced glare
  • Protection from the sun
  • Improves their ability to follow the ball during their round

Reduced Glare

Particularly on a sunny day, a glossy golf ball can be hard to see. So much so, in fact, that sunglasses are worn regularly, and some golf balls now have a matte finish.

At the impact position, you can have excellent vision courtesy of your hat brim. You'll have an easier time making contact when you can correctly identify the ball and its position.

Protection from The Sun

For hours at a time, golfers are exposed to a lot of sunlight. It is, after all, a daytime game played out-of-doors. Golfers have to create their own shade, since there is little to be found on your average golf course. Depending on the hat a golfer chooses, their head, neck, and face (and eyes) are better protected by the bill/brim of a cap.

In addition to a hat, of course, sunscreen is an absolute must out on the golf course.

Following The Ball

In addition to seeing the ball better so that a golfer can make proper contact with it, following the ball is easier courtesy of the bill/brim of their hat. It's easy to lose sight of a golf ball when it’s hit into the sun. This might not be a big problem if your shot was amazing. But it could prove difficult if you lose sight of your ball when it heads for a problematic area. When you wear a hat, it's easier to track your ball.

Professionals wear baseball caps and other hats for the same reasons listed above, but many can add one more to the list.

Sponsorship

Due to a sponsor, a specific type of baseball cap – or one with a particular logo – may be worn by a professional golfer. Visors may also have logos on them, but they do absolutely nothing when it comes to protecting the top of a golfer’s head from the hot sun.

Types of Caps

There are several types of headgear that can be worn by golfers. You'll see them all on golf courses most any day:

  • The visor – as just mentioned, though a visor can keep the sun out of a golfer’s eyes, it does absolutely nothing to protect their head.
  • The baseball cap – of all hats, this is the most traditional. Though there are fitted versions, those with adjustable backs are extremely popular. With a mesh back, this type of hat breathes well, allowing the golfer to stay cooler.
  • Bucket hat/sun hat – though not a baseball cap, this hat protects the top of a golfer’s head and even offers a brim (all the way around) for face and neck protection. This type of hat isn't particularly breathable, but many include small holes/vents for as much breathability as possible. For windy weather, some of these hats come equipped with strings. Additionally, some are waterproof for protection against the rain.
