Founded by Rev. Edward Soren in 1842, the private Catholic research university known as the University of Notre Dame is located just outside of South Bend, Indiana. The Basilica, Notre Dame Stadium, The Word of Life Mural and the Golden Dome are recognizable landmarks contained within this 1,261-acre suburban setting. In the United States, particularly where undergraduate education is concerned, it is considered one of the top universities. More than 15 summer programs and 50 year-long study programs abroad are offered by the University as well as a graduate program with more than 50 doctoral, professional degree, and master programs provided by six schools. Notre Dame maintains a system of scientific museums, artistic museums, cultural venues, and libraries.
In 1972, the University first enrolled women undergraduates. Since then, under the leadership of the following two presidents, the University has seen steady growth.
We're going to take an up close and personal look at the University here, finishing up with their football team and a number of Notre Dame alumni.
Transportation and Setting
The beautiful grounds housing the University of Notre Dame are located one hour east of Chicago. The environment is friendly and safe. While buses are available to take students to O'Hare and Midway airports, only one bus accesses the campus for those coming into the University. During fall, spring, and summer, many students use bikes.
Dorm Life
There is a very active style of dorm life at the University. Wherever you live, you're likely to make friends. The communities are more like tightknit families and there are no fraternities. Considered some of the best in the nation, the dining scene offers a handful of options.
Professors
At least three times a week, most professors hold office hours. Both teaching assistants and professors, however, can usually be accessed at various times of the day. Professors are quick to respond to students’ difficulties or concerns and are extremely personal, engaged, and intelligent.
University of Notre Dame Football

Coach Knute Rockne was one of the most successful football team coaches in history and, in the early 20th century, reached international fame.
