College Spotlight: Auburn University

One of the largest universities in the South, Auburn University, with its traditional blend of applied science and arts, is at the educational forefront. It respects tradition in spirit but changes with the needs of today's students and faculty.

Auburn University, an Alabama-located land grant and public research university, originally opened in 1859, but was chartered in 1856.

Currently, it has 1,260 faculty members, a total enrollment of over 30,000, and 23,000+ undergraduate students. In Alabama, it is the second largest university.

Auburn loves its sports! Sports teams of this university are referred to as The Tigers or The Auburn Tigers. Teams that play for The University consist of the following:

University Traditions

The official colors of Auburn University are navy blue and burnt orange. Among the many traditions at Auburn University, the following are included:

  • A battle cry
  • A fight song (War Eagle)

Another tradition that encourages students to get to know each other with the exclamation of a simple "Hey!" is Hey Day. The tradition originated in 1950s and 60s. In 1985, the tradition was reinstated with a slight change. Nametags were handed out and students were asked to wear them to make getting to know each other easier.
