We've all been told not to stay out in the sun too long because we could get sunburned, but could you get sunburned in the shade? In short, yes, you can get, but it's much more difficult to do so than getting sunburned while out in the direct sunlight. Here's why it happens and how you can protect yourself.
What Is a Sunburn?
A sunburn is a skin burn caused by overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from natural or artificial sources. How much UV exposure does it take to get a sunburn? It depends on many factors, including time, latitude, altitude, season, and weather conditions. For example, standing in direct sunlight at noon on a clear day, at sea level, during summer, would probably result in a serious sunburn for someone with light skin tones. However, one hour under an umbrella on that same beach might not cause any noticeable damage.
How to Avoid Getting a Sunburn in the Shade
If you have ever had a sunburn, you know how painful and annoying it can be. If you haven't experienced a sunburn yet, and want to avoid one as much as possible, we recommend taking some precautions before going out in the heat of the day. As with most things in life, prevention is key. One way to prevent getting sunburnt is to stay out of direct sunlight as much as possible. While that might sound like an obvious statement, many people spend their time directly under, or next to a tree or umbrella, thinking they will be protected from UV rays by those objects.
- The Sierra Hat
If you can't avoid spending time in direct sunlight, protective headwear is key. If you plan to be out all day, wear a baseball cap under a wide-brimmed hat. Both provide some protection against UVA rays, which are present even on cloudy days, and UVB rays. Make sure your hats also block 99 to 100 percent of both types of radiation, but don't assume all outdoor gear with SPF ratings are equally effective against both types of rays; some only protect against UVB.
- The Switchback Hat
A stylish design with UPF 50+ sun protection, the Switchback cap looks great, is highly effective, and will keep you looking cool all summer long! Switchback helps you protect your skin in style while enjoying everything that summer has to offer.
- Sports Fan Hats
Baseball caps are one of the best options. Many are designed specifically for sports fans, with team logos on them, so they look cool while helping keep the sun out of your eyes. Choose one that's made of mesh or lightweight cloth, so it wicks moisture away from your skin, which keeps you cooler when you're active.
A good rule of thumb when it comes to UV exposure is, if you are out in daylight for an extended time during midday hours, you are likely susceptible to harmful ultraviolet rays. It is important to remember that not all hats are made equal when it comes to sun protection. Often, clothing manufacturers will print a UPF rating on their products, but this is misleading. Always be sure to take precautions, such as wearing a cap even while in the shade.
