When it comes to summer fashion, few things make the kind of statement the right hat can make. But different styles of hats go with different occasions and varying personalities. Is there a perfect hat for summer for someone who has curly hair, thick hair, short hair, etc.? Are all hats created on a one-size-fits-all basis?
How do you choose the right summer hat? To help you begin your journey to blissful summer hat wearing, here are a few good rules of thumb.
Styles and Hats
Summer hats come in basically two styles – the stiff brimmed hat and the floppy hat. You can have a little bit of fun when choosing the right style to suit your face, hair, etc.
Consider your facial features and what you think your overall structure is. Think about your nose, your jawline, cheekbones, and your chin. Try a stiff brimmed hat if you think you have more rounded, soft features. Go with a floppy hat, however, if you feel you have more structured, angular features.
Colors and Hats
There are any number of ways to go here, but we're going to talk about coordinating your hat with your eye color versus your wardrobe.
Some people use their eye color on which to base their hat color choice. This is actually a great idea, particularly if you appear in photographs on a regular basis. Here is a list of hat colors and eye colors that coordinate well together:
- Olive green or mustard yellow hat – violet eyes
- Navy or deep plum hat – amber eyes
- Light tan or slate blue hat – brown eyes
- Burgundy or black hat – green eyes
- Deep charcoal or rust colored hat – blue eyes
- Blush or rust colored hat – hazel eyes
When choosing your hat color, you may wish to coordinate it with your outfit. Try a charcoal gray hat if you lean toward wearing mostly black. Neutral straw shades or oatmeal-colored hats go well with neutral-colored outfits.
Sizes and Hats
Typically, the largest hat size is 59 cm, the smallest is 53 cm. They are usually sized in increments of 2 cm. Larger varieties are being offered by numerous manufacturers these days, however. If you wear hair extensions, have curly or very thick hair, to allow for a little more room, you may wish to size up one hat size.
To help you get a better fit, a small ribbon is included on the inside of many hats. If no ribbon is present, but you need to snug your hat up a bit to create a more custom fit, try some hat tape.
What About the Brim?
A smaller brimmed hat is good if you have a short hairstyle. Or you can curl the brim. If you have curly or very full hair, choose a hat with a larger brim.
For a twist, consider pinning the sides of a floppy hat back up a little.
