A Guide To Dyeing Faded Baseball Caps

For those of you who sport baseball caps on the regular, chances are high you’ve noticed the color of your cap begin to fade due to time, sun exposure, and perspiration from your scalp. It’s easy for someone to tell you to simply buy a similar one and move on. However, for most of us, our prized possessions have sentimental value. Luckily, there is a way you can restore its color.

Supplies Needed for Dyeing Faded Baseball Caps

It’s decided – you’re going to keep this one. After everything you’ve been through with your cap, it would be sad to chuck it to the bottom of your wardrobe, never to be used again. Fret not, there are many ways to restore a fading baseball cap, and this is one of them. Plus, you don’t need to have any experience at all to bring your cap back to life! First, make a trip to your nearest department store to add these to your cart:

  • Instant fabric color spray in the color of your cap
  • Painter’s tape
  • Craft knife
  • Gloves
  • Old newspapers as a working surface to protect your space

Cover the Logo Before Dyeing Faded Baseball Caps

Great, we have everything we need to get started! Before getting to work, consider washing your cap once more to get rid of any remaining sweat or dirt so that it wouldn’t be trapped between the dye you’re about to layer on. Then, let your cap air dry. Next, a spot test is always recommended before starting your project. A quick blast to the inside of your cap where nobody will see is fine before committing, just to see if you’re good with how the dye looks on your cap’s surface.

You will want to cover all surfaces you don’t want to be covered with paint using a painter’s tape. This includes any logos, text, or labels. Grab your craft knife and gingerly trim the painter’s tape around those surfaces for a more exact fit. Note that you could easily plunge the knife through the hat, and possibly metaphorically through its owner’s heart, so remember to be as gentle as possible.

How to Properly Dye Faded Baseball Caps

Place your cap on a protected surface and spray onto it directly. After the first layer, do allow for the paint to dry for a few minutes before adding a second layer if necessary. Don’t forget the bottom of your cap’s bill, too, but not the inside. Once complete, remove the tape and leave your garment to dry for a few hours, depending on the spray can’s directions, before touching it. For most paint products, your cap may be quite stiff right after spraying. It will take a few wears to get your cap loosened up, but don’t worry, it doesn’t last long.
